line twist

HNTNBUX

Question

I bought a new pflueger supreme reel this spring and I have severe line twist. I have gone through and entire spool of mono and have had to cut off two sections of Power Pro so far. I am using the setup mostly to case tube jigs, beetle spins and the thumper jig. I have never had so many problems it is driving me crazy. Could this be something wrong with the reel or is it more likely the jigs are twisting the line?

Are you tying directly to the jig or using a swivel in between?

If you are trolling you can cut off the lure, let out your line and just drag the line around for a little bit to get rid of the line twist.

Personally I always use swivels and don't get twist.

I don't like to use swivels. They add weight and if you're using snap swivels to attach jigs, they will interfere with jig action.

I don't have a lot of trouble with line twist using jigs by themselves but with spinner rigs I will. Even with swivels, they will still twist your line to some degree. The easiest way to rid yourself of the line twist is to drag the line behind the boat for a few seconds then reel it back in. Let it all out of your reel when you do this.

Really?.. I will say this..and not to be harsh.. but line twist has little to do with the reel. I hate to say it, its the fault of the person using it. The reel its self can twist line..

Here is what it could be.

1)Lure spinning.. improper baiting/rigging, causing the lure to spin.

2)Reeling against the drag...

3)Closing the bail after each cast with the reel handle(if making a ton of casts.. each time it puts anywhere between 1/4 and 1/2 twist.)

Thats it.. period!!! a reel with a roller bearing in the bail its self can help with line twist, but only minor.. its one of the 3 above.
