1997 Ford Explorer

V6 SOHC

130,000 miles

Engine off, lights off, keys out but still the warning chime sounds when you open the drivers door. Also, if the drivers door is locked and the back door is not and you open the back door, the "panic" horn goes off. Could these be related?

Also, what should I expect to pay to have new ball joints installed?

I think the key in switch is bad, the module is thinking the key is in the ignition, that is why it dings when you open the drivers door. A scan tool would be needed to verify this.

If so. How?

Sure, but first you'll need to spend a couple thousand dollars for the scan tool. Much cheaper to drop a hundred bucks or so to have it figured out.
