On Board Charging Units

lumpy

Question

Mine old one burned out last year and am wonder what brands or price ranges to consider and which ones to stay away from. I've got a 24 volt system with front/back electric motors and I like to use the front for trolling spinners a lot. Currently I have two Trojan batteris that have held up well for 3 years now. The last on board unit burned through Interstate batteries in a year so I've been trying to charge most of the time with a separate charger and it's been working OK. I'm asuming there are some good units to consider out there right now.

I've had a 2 bank Cabela's charger in the boat for 2 or 3 years and it has been flawless. That said, there are a lot of mixed reviews on their site as far as long term durability, so I am putting a Minn Kota 3 bank 30amp in my fish house. The Minn Kota's cost a little bit more, but bad reviews are few and far between.

Do you unplug them after the batteries are done charging or let them trickle charge until you use the boat again.

I leave mine plugged in all the time. After each battery is charged the charger goes into a maintenance mode --- it doesn't trickle charge continuously, it monitors each battery and charges if needed to keep them fully charged.
