Pounders - Super Mag vs. Mega D

Recommended Posts

I'll try to take a stab at this. I have both brands. I have a ton of confidence in musky innovation lures so I'm partial but there is a few differences in how they are built.

Super D's are more stiff(probably from the thicker wire harness). The rubber material is also really durable. Bulldawgs on the other hand has a softer plastic even the newer visions are softer than the super d's I think but still way more durable from what they were using before this newer better version. The difference from how they work in the water IMO I found musky innovation to run more straight. The super d has the tendancy to roll more. I'm sure there will be other opinions on if they even run different in the water. Also the super d are slightly heavier but there price are tough to beat. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Just saw this. My only comment on Dawgs is that when I saw the new Pro Dawgs at the MN show this year I was very impressed with the paint job and overall lure look. Brad really did a good job on the new Pro Dawgs. I have not ran one so I cannot comment on that nor should I since I own the SuperD line wink

Note on the MegaD Shallows, they do role some if you bring them in fast. They are made to work slowly. I honestly doubt the musky care. Maybe if you bring them in fast and they role it will resemble a dying fish. ha ha The MegaD "Heavy" has more weight low in the bait that acts as a ballast and you can bring them in a lot faster. The harness is also a full length coil harness welded in 5 places on the main harness body wire so the bodies will stay on after multiple hits. You can also adjust the harness as needed to tweek or make them do tricks. A lot of guys twist them so they do role or twist and will also "banana" them so they rise on the jerk. The plastisol is about 10% tougher than what I used a few years ago and comes from BASF. I also put on triple tempered stainless steel rings so no need to change those out plus I put one in the nose of the lure. Also made 6 packs (6 different colors in each set) of replacment tails for these a month ago if you loss any tails. They will fit MegaDs, Pounders, big Shack Attack swimbatis etc. Good luck this Spring!

I am a big fan of the Super Ds. I tend to throw the Super Ds more but have used the bigger sizes. Two years ago I wouldn't even throw any soft plastic but I have caught more on the TI stuff over the past year than anything else when casting. The action is a little different for each bait. The Super Ds tend to fall faster which makes them better for working deeper/suspended fish (not as much counting down). They are also MUCH more durable. The other thing is choice of color - you can get an of the TI swimbaits in about 800 colors. The only reason I use the MI stuff is they have a color that works exceptionally well in our local lakes.

I have both to, and both produce fish. I tend to run the TI baits more due to durability, I have yet to ruin one casting unlike a dawg. Now if I could just get James to pour me a certain color I'd be a happy man...

I have been to his warehous, it's amazing to say the least. Reminds me of the old saying, A Kid in a Candy Store. Plus you can't beat his customer service.

I own all 3! MI, Shack Attack, and Super D's! They are all good baits! But I can't get passed the price difference for a quality bait and thats why the Super D's are filling the slots in my tackle box! Super D's catch as many fish as the rest at a fraction of the cost! The money I save can be put toward something else I need! Just my .02 cents! I have a Super D that has 6 muskies under its belt and is still Very Fishable! A quality bait that the working man can afford! Its a "NO BRAINER"

Walleye patterns, perch patterns, black/orange, cisco, and all black, seem hard to beat. Each brand does something different they don't all work the same, each has their moments. #40 from TI IMO is a must have I have that in 3 sizes and doubles just in case. Getting a big rubber addiction can get expensive, I got about 40 in the box, dozen or so back ups and a dozen or so in the " needs repaired" box. Can't argue though they catch fish and realy no wrong way or time to work them. I just hang mine in the Lakewoods for the mags/pounders, little ones go in the plano in back the Lakewoods. Keep the hooks sharp, T the front ones and bend the rear ones out a touch. Buy extra tails and a bottle ( or 3) of Mend It or Spike It for repairs.

Essox has some tips there that I might have to try. The must have colors for me are motor oil, black/orange and walleye. I also always add a split ring to the eye hook of the lure. For repairs all I use is a torch and butter knife. Heat up the knife with the torch and then weld the damage plastic together.

I carry a torch to but have found the Mend It/Spike It is easier and honestly works better. Torch is for when you rip the harness out of the head and have to add material from a retired one. Good point about adding the split ring to the eye, forgot that one.

Now for casting the Mag/Pounder sized make sure you have a rod capable of casting and ripping these, I prefer an XH or XXH 8'6" or better. I do love a dawg hit, sometimes those rip the rod out of your hands hit, other times just nothing there on your next rip. Work them shallow over weeds or down deep counting them down, steady retrieve or hard rips, add a set of 10/13 blades and burn them over cover.

Little tip for those that foul on the cast, hold the rod by the butt, hold the tip high and snap the rod, 90% of the time this will unfoul the bait. I also like to stick the rear hook in the back of the bait.
