red eyes?

I found a half dozen of small soft red colored round things. They were about the size of an eye and were growing from the ground. were these perhaps the beginning of some puffballs? has anyone else seen these?

I hope you're kidding... Never put something in your mouth that might be a mushroom you can't identify! There are some that can kill a man (deathcap for example).

Puffballs start out white and solid. They turn brown when they dry out and fill with spores.
