shiltsy
Great info guys and excellent recap from the Humminbird rep. I ended up ordering a 788ci on the bow and 898 on the console. Can't wait to get them installed and "online" the first time...
Larson15
Shiltsy, make sure you get an interlink so you can utilize them both together. Also, please be aware that with the 898 (or any side-imaging unit) you will not be able to get high speed depth readings with the SI transducer. You will have to get a thru the hull transducer (2D dual beam transducer) and use a "AS SIDB Y" connector to run both transducers off of the unit. Once this is done the only thing the SI transducer does is read SI and the 2D always reads depth and sonar. I just completed this same installation so feel free to ask any questions. shiltsy
I did order the Interlink as well, but I definitely didn't plan for a second transducer to read depth at high speeds. Is it just noisy at speed or does it not read depth at all?I have a flasher at the console that I can use for depth if needed.
Larson15
It will not read at all at high speeds.
SimilarIsland
Mine reads to about 40.I went to a seminar with Doug Vahrenberg about a year ago and he gave many examples of SI on the bow. It is one of the only ways to "see" what is in front of the boat, instead of behind it. I can see where it would be a very valuable tool. I have it on the console, but have thought many times how it would come in handy on the bow.
SStracker
SStracker, if you were to do it over would you rather have a 858 or 958 up front with bigger screen and no SI or would you still go with the 787 on bow? I bought my boat a year ago with the 787/997 combo on it from the previous owner. I would have done dual 997's or 997/1197. The 958 (maybe 1157 if I have the extra cash) is what I will go with if I decide to upgrade from the 787.
