I bought one this spring. Only used so far for crappies. Looking forward to the light weight on trips where we fish dawn to dusk day after day. Got my 1000 model at fleet farm. I noticed both stores carried them whereas gander and scheels in st cloud did not. Dont know about cabelas but is on their HSOforum. I hope the price was worth it. What rod are you pairing with? Right now i got it on a Mr. walleye 7 foot med light rod.

So far the reel is smooth and drag is nice too. No complaints so far other than price. It doesnt come with extra spool for being higher priced. But then i never use the extra spool anyways. If i like it this year imay buy another one perhaps the 2500 model. I wish they had a 1500 model or so.

I mostly do shore fishing so Long 7ft rods arnt my cup of tea. I was thinking of pairing this reel (I want shimano stradic ci4 2500) with a 6ft medium power fast action Fenwick HMX. Do you think these 2 will work well together? I want a rod that works for all kinds of fhishing...i use jigs alot of crappies but i want it to also work decent down on the Alma fishing float on pool 4 of the mississippi

I have always used 7 ft rods when shore fishing. Gives me longer casts. That fenwick should be great. Myself i am getting into fenwicks. I tried st croix and just not a fan of the rod design where the reel is attached to the rod. No comfort in holding the rod and the ring keeps untwisting. I bought two fenwick gt's this year. Nice rods for the price. Tempting to try the hmx too but the design is different. The 1000 may be a bit small for 7 ft rod, but i dont need much line anyways. If you can afford it i say go for it!

i dont like 7ft rods cause i have a tendency to slam the rod tip in the door of the car with longer rods + walking threw the woods to get to your spot sucks with a giant pole! + i want a lighter set up.

Do you think the 1000 or the 2500 would be a better fit? there both the same price but the 1000 is lighter and i rly dont think i need that much line...

Do you like the design of the HMX? which fenwick rod design is your favorite?

Either shoul be fine. But with a 6 ft rod i would use 1000 model. But you prob cant go wrong either way. Right now i am using the eagle gt fenwick. Cheaper and screws from the top to set the reel on the rod. Just have bad experience with st croix and the locking ring always sliding down. But i may try the hmx. Gary Roach's Mr. Walleye rod isnt bad either.

you will get longer casts from the 2500...

Dietz, I am in the same boat. 1000 or 2500. How much difference are we talking on cast? I plan to only use it for walleye so I wont be casting more than 30 feet. Any other differences I should know about?

Thanks.

Keep in mind the Inches Per Turn are pretty different between the 1000 and 2500. 1000 gets 29 IPT while the 2500 has 34 IPT. The 2500 also had a 15lb drag while the 1000 has a 7lb drag. I mainly use my spinning setup for docks and shakey head fishing so I went with the 2500 for the higher IPT so I can get fish out of the docks quicker. The 1000 is still a nice reel and not too small for bassin in open water, but if you are throwin bigger lures or fishing around cover I'd opt for the 2500 for sure.
