'Twas the Night before Opener

and all through our abode, all the Jackpines are stirring, in that preseason mode;

The camo is draped on the furniture and floor, while Mrs. shakes her head and then slams the bedroom door;

The calls are in pockets, and shells in their place, as the guns lie in readiness, each in its case;

The wind in the trees hints at maybe some rain, but we just don't care - what's a little pain?

The turkeys are braced for the night in their trees, nary thinking a thought about Jr. and me;

I'll drain the lost drop from my "night before" beer, and then head off to bed, knowing morning is near;

In the predawn darkness we will stumble and curse, knowing one thing's for sure - not going is worse;

And when dawn lights the sky and the gobbling begins, it will be the turkeys that fall, and the Jackpines that wins.
