I will throw my vote towards shimano stradics....I want to try a president since I have heard such great things but stradics are by far my favorite reel! They are smooth and the drag is the best I have used on a spinning rod thus far and I have three! You can tell alot by trying them out at the stores and from talking to people but you have to fish with them before you will really know what you like, good luck and in that price range you cant go wrong really!

I would also add check out the new 10 bearing Gander GSX line just out. Very nice, and very pocketbook friendly too.
