I have an old Scott and love it... still has the old RockShox that came installed.. bike is over 10 years old and still riding great... Tires.. i really like Maxxis. i used Holy Rollers when i was trail riding.. big fat tires.. lots of cushion and enough grip to get the job done... last year converted my bike to a more road friendly ride and switched to Geax tires.. they have well over a 1000mi on them and barely look worn..

as for shocks.. all those companies make great shocks.. when you're willing to dish out for more than their entry level setups...

have ridden Trek, Giant, Specialized and they all ride well.. so it really will just come down to what bike you feel comfortable on.. so ride a couple and then decide

I am 5'7" and have a 29er. Seats down almost to the tube and I have no problems. It is a Mongoose Deception and I got it for $200 at Wally World. Dual disc brakes, shimano gears. It has been a pretty nice bike, I wouldn't hesitate buying another one in a few years.

"Big Box" bikes are for city adventures.. you try taking that thing on a trail and it'll fall apart on you... Mongoose ain't what it use to be

Actually, read up on that model on the mountain bike forum, been doing really well on trails. I am more of a city rider regardless but its still testing good. My only complaint is it needs to be shop tuned.

So has anyone made any upgrades to any of their equipment?

I got clip in pedals (and shoes). I really like that.

I recently got a new seat with a "love" channel. I haven't been able to ride since I got that but I am looking forward to it. Hopefully it will result in no numbness sickcrazy after my ride grin
