Dog eating dog house

Just bought my dog a brand new cedar dog house last week and he has decided it is the perfect chew toy. I put chew toys in his kennel but he is still chewing on the house. I've told him to stop but just like the kids he doesn't listen. Any suggestions on how to deter him from this behavior?

There are some super awful astringent tasting potions you can smear around-one is bitter apple as I recall- and that might help. I'm surprised he likes to chew cedar though because of the oils in it.

Aversion therapy is all I can suggest.

I have a puppy like this, eats plastic crates, heavy rubber (lines the bottom of crate), dog beds, etc. It is potentially dangerous.(I thought for sure we would be going in for surgery at some point)

But what I found worked for me anyways was put either cream cheese, peanut butter or raw hamburger in a Kong toy and freeze it the night before and let her work at during the day. I also have to give morning exercise before I go to work. Just be careful if you have a deep chested breed, if you feed in the morning you cant overdue the exercise (they can have torsion)

Does the dog have separation anxiety?

I agree- I think the dog is BORED. He needs more exercise or they get destructive.

We had something eating our cabin and we stapled chicken wire around the parts they were chewing on...the wire on the outside made it impossible to chew on without hurting teeth.

I had the same problem with my lab when he was young. Built a nice insulated dog house and he decided it was to hot in there one winter night and destroyed one of the walls. i got home from work that morning and there was pink insulation everywhere. After that he started on the opening. Went to the pet store and sprayed down the whole house with that bitter apple stuff. That was the last time he chewed on the house.

On a side note if anyone is building a dog house don't use treated lumber. if they eat it they can get very sick or possibly die
