Trolling Motor Question

nwa1819

Question

I have a question about Minnkota's 40lb thrust bow mount trolling motor. I have a 16ft Northwoods Fishing Boat with a 30hp motor. I am concerned that the 40lb thrust might not be large enough for the boat but am unsure and would like some input! Thanks a lot.

I agree with the advice about upgrading to the 55 lb. I believe it's still the biggest you can go (minnkota) and still be 12 volt (one battery). I fished many years on the st croix with that motor and had no trouble getting around in my 16 footer. I had a 36 before that and it was not enough. If you don't fish the river, you are probably fine either way.

What's the beam and weight on your boat? I have a 40lb Minnkota that I bought for my '85 Fisher. It was a light 16' boat with only a 68" beam at a 35hp motor. It pushed that boat around with no problem even in the wind. Now I've got a 16.5' Alumacraft Navigator that is quite a bit heavier with a 91" beam and 90hp motor. I still have the 40lb thrust Minnkota and it works fine for me. It would be nice to have more power on windy days, but it's not like I can't go anywhere. If I were buying a new trolling motor I would go with the 55lb thrust for my boat but for you, it all depends on the weight of your boat and how much time you really spend using it in big waves. I rarely use the trolling motor in big waves like that so it's no big deal.

Thanks for all of the information. I ended up going with the 45lb thrust Minnkota since it was on sale at Cabelas. Skunked not sure of my beam but its a light 16ft and only has a 30hp motor so I think it will do just fine for me! Again thanks for your help.
