lungdeflator
How much should go out each time a site gets refreshed? What to use to draw them in to a new site?
charliepete
I put about 100#'s out each time. I bait about every 5 days or so.
lakeshoremunster
I use one five gallon bucket per site every two days, but now with the new atv we will be using more so we dont have to go up there every two days, use as much as you would like to put out.The less you put out the more you have to go rebait.Carbs, sweets and highly scented things work best for me. Boar
I like to use about five gallons at a time, but i live right near my sites an dont have to travel longs distances. 5 gallons also I think puts some compitition at the site in hopes they come in early to get their share before its gone. Grease up the area really good, opening a site with alot of fryer grease an spread all over shrubs an trees an trails. I grease up everytime I bait, the heat of August really gets that grease to stink good an can smelled for a long distance by a bear. lakeshoremunster
Have you guys ever thought about trying those fruit scented incenses to lure bear into your site, I think that would be better than a honey burn because with the incenses there is really no flame to get out of control. Boar
I've tryed to use those made by deer scense, I've used every flavor they make for bear an havent had any luck with them, they are not ment to open a site with in my mind, maybe to lure in a nocturnal bear, if you really wanna get scent out quick when opening a site, I like to bring in a propane burner like for a turkey deep fryer. Ill buy a bunch of honey from sams club an alot of cherrry koolaid mix or jello an boil that stuff for Half an hour or so while I establish a crib or hang a stand, put up the site sign, ect. ect. Then I dump it onto my bait, That suff will reach out an leech onto folieage, I've had good luck doing this an doing the grease thing. charliepete
My buddy shot a bear that came right to the the berry flavored incense he was burning. Of course he's used it plenty of other times with nothing to show for it. In my book if a bear is coming in they are coming in. There isn't some magical spray that changes the game on all bears. With any of the bear scent bombs, scented sprays, incense sticks etc. the best thing they can possibly do is give someone the confidence to sit a stand patiently for just a little longer. I'll put my money on the guy that sits the longest and the stillest. Patience and the belief in 'any minute now' has helped me catch more fish and shoot more animals than any gimmick ever will. remington 300
amen to the part about sittin still the longest, because shootin bear over bait is no sure thing, its awefully hard to fool there sense of smell and hearing together, especially a mature bear! pulleye16
I too just use a five gallon bucket full. To me its about timing. When you're in a low pressured area with bear around, we've found that putting bait out around the time we will start hunting worked the best. IMO the bear got use to hearing the four wheelers like a dinner bell!! As for food...anything that stinks....or is FREE! we will hit up bars and more then often they let us crawl in the grease dumpster. Some grocery stores will give you their old produce if pig farmers don't beat you to it. One trick we've learned, if you hear of a local fire at a store, bakery, resturant or where has food....It's fair game as they have to get ride of it. We once got over ten 5 gallon buckets of frostin, five 5 gallon bucket of cookie dough and a bunch of other pastries from a backery fire. We've been giving bears diabetes for 5 years now!!! lakeshoremunster
What are your guys thoughts on using dogfood mixed with old fryer oil, yes or no. This year I have not been able to get my hands on any doughnuts, so I'm looking for other bait ideas.
nik
Dogfood will work good especially when mixed with fryer oil, peanut butter, bacon bits, or anything else that is nice and stinky. We have found that some bears don't like the dogfood, so don't rely on it alone. If you see that the dog food is not being eaten, switch it up to what they are eating. pulleye16
I'm all about the freebies....but when you need to buy food go cheap. The Dog food Idea I've acually heard people using before and is generally cheap but one bag will probably only fill two loads. mix with grease from breakfast or what ever you've been deep frying lately. Also, cheap gravey mixes work well too. you could probably find something lb for lb less expensive then dog food though. Alot of bread distribution compnaies have racks of day olds that they'l make you sign a waiver before taking but you can usually purchase a whole rack of bread loafs for under $5. And if your planning on bear hunting this year, just start keeping your table scraps and freeze them.
YellowOtter1
Cheap dog food and fryer grease works good. Another thing I've found works and is cheap is popcorn. Buy a cheap air popper, popcorn is usually pretty cheap, and fill a garbage bag in no time. I also spread bacon grease on the trees around the pit. Take it easy on pouring fryer grease all over the place, they get it all over their coats from my experience.
Nightcrawler
lots of things to use i see. to save the running around I go to the feed store get 2- 50 lbs of expensive dog food.($38) the cheap stuff gets soggy in the rain and does not stay crunghy. 5 gal. on cattle molass.($11 with old jug) Half pail dog food +1 qt. molass ,mix. Bait..get about 3 bottles of pure vanilla, put in clean spray bottle. after baiting pour molass around in front ( aprox. qt.)so bear will track out and spread the scent. the vailla spray bushes 6ft up around bait station. check eveery other day ,once bait has been hit, i bait every day . beating pail clean is like a dinner bell. this has worked for the last fifteen years. less bees and skunks. cover with heavy enough logs and out so coon won't roll of bait. coon and skunks will dig under if not enough logs .
