Best Inexpensive Line Counter Trolling reel

Recommended Posts

What is a good reel at a cheap price? What type of line/size do you use for walleye trolling. 20/40 lb braid? Heavy flouro. Braid with long flouro leader?

I would like to have atleast one stored away, spooled up and if we want just take a reel off a rod in the boat, put on the line counter, throw on a crank, and troll away.

I guess the rod is important as well but I think I have a good one for that which will usually be in the boat. 7'10" heavy bass flippin rod with fast tip. Should be perfect. I used it for my muskie fishing for 2 seasons, but just bought a compre 8' xh and an abu 7000 for the skis.

Thanks in advance. Ryan

diawa makes some nice line counters the sealines are 100 bucks but their are the only ones that raelly hold up to the punishing and such. Anyway i back my rods with a cheaper mono and then put fireline 10lb on them with a mono shock leader sometiems other times i just tie fireline direct easy to tell when you have a small weed or piece of debri on your line.

I have been using Diawa Accudepth Plus line counters for the last few years and they have performed flawlessly. They are about 20-30 bucks chaeper than the Sealines. I recently found them at a local store (MFF) for $49.99. I have the 17's for long line trolling and 27's for boards and lead core. I prefer 10 lb mono. You will get a lot of different opinions on line. If you do use a braid make sure you are using a whippy rod with a medium action. With braid and a medium heavy or heavy action musky rod you are going to have a lot of misses from pulling the hooks right out of the fishes mouth.

The Diawa Accudepths are a great reel for the $. Many people have run them for years. At less than $50 they are probably the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

I run the Sealines because they are a bit smoother and have a better drag system and they are time proven. They are twice the price though.

I have the Sealine 27's spooled with 10lb Fireline. I also know people who run the Accudepths, good reel for the money, but I also think the Sealines are smoother.

I would go with a lighter rod especially with braid you'll rip the hook right out of a walleyes mouth without even trying.

yea the accudepths are nice for the money but me and several buddies always seem to have the counters go out on em, if you get the right person at cabelas or gander they might replace them but other than that the sealines are a very smooth.

What I've noticed on a lot of the cheaper linecounters is there is no instant anti reverse. Is this a non issue when trolling like this because there is always tension on the line, or should a guy make sure to get one that locks up instantly?

Can't go wrong with the Diawas. I have a couple gander linecounters and a couple Okumas and they aren't bad reels. So far they've survived 5 seasons of salmon fishing on Lake Michigan and trolling boards and cranks for walleyes. Run about 40 for the gander reels and 65 for the Okumas. I am happy with the performance to date.
