How long have they been there?

Recommended Posts

Match set we found up north last year. Hard to find info on how long it takes the moss to grow or how long antlers can sit out and withstand the weather. Ive found most sites kind of compile the mosses seen into "Reindeer Moss". How long have these been sitting here?

Quite awhile. They are also good at puncturing tractor tires from time to time, been down that road on the farm. I always hear about how antlers get chewed up etc. For some reason in my area we rarely very rarely ever find a horn that's been chewed on. Which critters do that the most ? Is it red, fox, gray squirrels, chipmunks, mice ? My thinking is we are finding them fairly recently after dropping so there isn't much chance for rodents ? We still have a few bucks carrying racks in the area. That is a cool photo deflator, my guess would be a winter ago's sheds, looks like the ground was worked a bit, do you know when someone dragged that area ?

This isnt farm country. Its up in Canada. We rarely find chewed sheds up there either, but find alot of chewed ones in the big woods. I did some more research and saw that the reindeer moss grows 1-3 mm per year. So depending on what some of those other plants are around them, they could have been there 10-15 years it looks like? Most sheds we find up there are aged, rarely fresh. Almost all are bleached pure white from the sun, and most have cracks and such from the elements. We have no idea how long an antlers life span is so just really curious...
