Lure paint and sealant

Looking for a little help for repainting musky lures.

Want to repaint a topraider, jackpot and hellhound. Going to sand the current finish off the hellhound and jackpot. Want to paint an orange with block dot pattern for the hellhound. Just spray paint the lure orange, Sharpie on some black dots, and then I want to seal it.

What sealant do you use to coat a lure? Vipers, warlocks, the finishes on those lures are great.

Will do the same thing for the jackpot and topraider. Have tried spray painting before and adding glitter, but the finish always looking dull and wears off quickly. Spray paint not the way to go?

Most durable finish will probably be a hard Epoxy. Devcon 2 ton 30 minute epoxy gives a really hard thick layer that is water and UV resistant. Really glossy and you can mix your glitter right in with it. Takes a little bit of practice to get it right. I really don't know my musky lures very well, but the Viper lure that I just saw online looked to be an epoxy coating of some type.

Even the 30 minute gives you about 5-8 minutes to get the lure covered. After that it really starts to setup. For this same reason, do not try to use the 5 minute epoxy, it sets up too fast. I add a little high concentration IPA to the mix to thin it out a little and extend the open time some. The other thing you have to do is turn the lure until it sets up so it doesn't slump. 4 hours to handle and about 24 hours to be fully cured.

A lot of guys dip lures with Richard Nite stuff, but I really don't have any experience with that. This site automatically changed the name of the *@*@ Nite to Richard by the way. Kinda funny.

Have you ever considered the UV enhanced spray paints? You can also get very good spray sealers. For touch-up work, this could be an option and maybe a "new edge" on the fish..the UV enhanced paint part that is.

If you've ever heard of the T.U. site, plenty of info there. Also you might want to pose the question on the Rod Building/Lure Making forum to get at the custom making guys there.

Check out the lure and rod building forum. It's just a bit further down the forum list here on HSO. You'll get a better response there. I use Devcon 2 ton on my paint jobs and it works well but doesn't have the uv protection.

with any fast curing epoxy you are going to get bubbles or yellowing, 24hr is better, and high spots, most of the plug builders seal the plugs ie waterproofing the wood b4 priming them with Helmsman Satin - do not use gloss - Spar Urethane cut 60/40 with Mineral Spirits, or Helmsman Spar Uerathane cut 50/50 with Mineral Spirts, dip them for 1 to 2 minutes and wipe off the excess and hang them to dry for a day or two. or etex (envirotex), u could also try flexcote after u paint the lure as a clear coat
