Soldering on an Aqua Vu Monitor to Camera Connector....

fishlips

Question

Has anyone ever repaired an Aqua Vu connector using the available connector repair kit? I have the wiring diagram and the new connector, but there is a bare, fine wire that is wrapped in with the black (ground) and white (video) wire and the instructions don't tell you what to do with the bare wire. I know there is a place in Cross Lake that runs the Aqua Vu repair system, but does anyone know of a place in the Twin Cities that does Aqua View repair?

One final question. If I do figure out the repair, I'd like to place epoxy around the soldered wires as added assurance. Anyone have any recommendations as to an epoxy type thats easy to use and effective?

A solder joint should not need to be epoxied. I am going to be taking mine apart tonight because that cable connector for the camera is junk. My guess is from what you are describing is a shield wire for the cable. If you don't get this answered hopefully I will have a better answer for you. If the area you are soldering does not go under water you should not need epoxy. You just need to make sure that the wire insulation is as close to the solder connection as possible.

yes, if there is a foil shield on one of the wires then the fine wire is probably a connection to the foil. If so it can be left unconnected or it can be connected to 'ground' which I guess would be the minus side of the battery. I would just leave it unconnected and see how it works.

Sorry mine was a broken wire inside the monitor assembly. There are 4 wires. Think they were red yellow black and white. that connector is pretty junky. I am suprised it lasted as long as it did. If you can find that schematic online and give me a link I might be able to help you figure out what the wire is. Video is pretty high frequency. The video may work but if it is snowy you will want to hook the shield wire up.

Thanks for the replies....you guys were correct, the bare wire just gets cut down and not connected to anything. I tried to do the soldering work last night, but the solder cups are too small and too close together - I don't have the skill or equipment to do it. Does anyone know of a place in the cities that specializes in small scale soldering?
