Depends on the species.

Hook and slip bobber is very versatile. I can't ever remember fishing with anything else growing up. I had so much dirt under my fingernails from digging crawlers you coulda planted an herb garden on my fingertips!

If you're out for walleye a bit deeper, I would say, without a doubt, if walleyes are on the bottom a slip sinker/long snell/hook/bait combo will be your best producer. When all else fails, it's my go-to, especially for fishing new water. And it's along the same principals of simplicity as you suggested.

In all honesty, I've thought about trashing my tackle box and simplifying. Year-in and year-out, I bet I fish those two methods more than anything else: period.

It completely depends on the species and how they're feeling at a particular point in time.

One thing you can't get out of a minnow is the crazy splashing and fast action you can get from some lures.

If you want to fish american made lures, take up musky fishing.

Also, there are many MANY smaller-time operation american lure makers. If you fish bass, there are TONS of guys in the good ol' USA who pour soft plastics and sell them. There are also lots of guys who hand carve and hand paint crankbaits. These can be a little pricier, but that's what you get for individual lure attention and hand paintjobs.
