Timing belt advice

How often do the experts on here recommend replacing a timing belt. What should I expect to pay for this? The vehicle is a 2003 Hyudai Sonata.

I will say in your owners manual at what intervals to change the T-Belt.

It also depends if it is an interference engine where if it breaks you will smash your valves. If it is you have to be more careful, if not you are really not out much if it breaks.

Jer you have no idea how good that advice really is (actually you probably do)! I had a Plymouth Laser (I think 1991) where the belt let go before I replaced it and WOW the cost I couldn't beleive the damage it did in the valve train when that thing let go...

Yeah, I think the owners manual calls for replacement at 60,000 miles-I need to get moving on this. Would everyone recommmend a dealer do this type of work or?

I replaced timing belts in my '01 Sequoia (90K) and '04 Accord (95K) this fall. I think the Accord ran about $700 with the belt, gaskets, and new water pump.

A dealer is fine but you can shop around and find quotes in all sorts of price ranges. They are a pretty easy belt to do (comparatively speaking) and shouldn't be any problem for any shop with experienced techs.

I nearly coughed up a lung when buerkle honda wanted $450 for my CRX, I don't have AC or power steering making the job a bit easier.

I cracked open a manual and did the timing belt/water pump/alt belt myself for $85. So far I've gone nearly 30k w/o incident. Getting the crank bolt loose was the toughie, especially w/o a crank pulley holder.

Of course all the money I saved went towards more fishing gear.
