Chevy 6 speed tranny w 6.0L

Recommended Posts

to any of you with the 6 speed tranny with the 6.0L gas trucks..

What are your thoughts on this tranny compared to the 4 speed. I am trying to decide between this and a diesel. My main concern is if the tranny will be to busy and want to shift all the time with the 6 speed.

Is there any improved mileage, not that I care about this very much.

What diesel are you considering? The Duramax with the 6-speed Alison became available in 2006. Gears 1-5 remained the same as prior years while the 6th gear is nothing more than a double overdrive....perfect for cruising.

What they did with the 6.0L transmission I'm not sure of. I thought it was a 5 spd.

That's sort of the point of more gears, isn't it? To shift more often in order to more closely match the current load/driving situation?

If you are considering the new 6.0 liter to get good mileage....well don't buy it.

We have 3 at my workplace, 1 dually 1 ton 2 3/4 tons, loaded towing we get 6.5mpg/7mpg driving conservatively, trucks empty do 11mpg/12mpg interstate traveling that's it.

I would jump on a diesel immediately, even with a $ 8,000 sticker price difference.

Transmission is nice, I actually like the shifting, you can also choose to manually change gears, besides the standard Tow Haul.

We have 3:73 gear ratio and it's too "long" if you want to tow heavy or large units (RVs, etc). you will get to drive at 65mph with the motor screaming at 3500 rpm or more, in 4th gear.

Looking at the duramax. I am not concerned about the mileage that much. You don't buy a 3/4 ton truck for the mileage. I was just curious if the mileage increased on the 6 speeds. I am more concerned about whether or not it shifts constantly like the new 1/2 ton 6 speeds. what a pain in the @$$.

Yes you do, my 3/4 ton tows the boat in the picture and still does 14mpg, same when I tow my 32ft flatbed with 16,000lbs of hay

Empty does around 20mpg, wintertime 18.5mpg

Valv,

What make of truck do you have? Gas/Diesel? The mileage sounds so much different than in your earlier post.

Have you ever figured out how many mile you have to put for the fuel savings to pay for the extra cost of the diesel?
