Should I be worried?

Pumps wear more when the tank is less than 1/4 full. Fuel is the only lubricant the pumps use. When running under 1/4 tank, your running w/o any lube. You will probably end up replacing it, but keep your next pump good by keeping at minimum 1/4 tank.

The fuel is what keeps the pump cool. More often than not a fuel pump will fail on a hot day with a low tank than a full tank. Numerous pumps will fail to work after filling up from a nearly empty tank on a hot summer day. I see these two scenarios all summer long.

The fuel runs through the pump. The motor, brushes, magnets, windings, commutator, etc are submerged in fuel 24/7. The only time they would not be is if you ran the tank dry so there really isn't an issue with lubrication.

The #1 killer of any electrical or electronic component is heat!

Today's fuel pumps are electric motor driven and submerged in the fuel tank. As Airjer said, if the tank level is allowed to go low the motor will not be submerged and therefore will lack adequqate cooling. Overheating will shorten the life of the motor.
