HD Lake maps for PC?

Zoob

Recommended Posts

So I don't have a fish finder or map device. I just hunt by looking at the crude DNR Lake Finder topo maps, and guesstimate where I should be; punch some holes, try it for a few days. (Although fishing's been sooo slow on my lake - S.Lindstrom - this year for most I've talked with).

I'm hanging out in my bay area (NE part) near my shoreline - and was wondering if there is any software out there for the PC that has those HD contour like maps I've seen folks talking about (the chips for this and that).

Using my craptacular handheld LCD GPS, I could find the close-enough position on the lake with lat/long if I was able to have a decent HD map.

Something for the PC, like Google Maps or something - that I can browse through and maybe print out and then with my GPS go walking to where I think it is - drop the shelter and fish.

In my googling, all I'm finding is chips to plug into this unit or that unit -- nothing that's just PC software I can install and use.

Any ideas?

Lakemaster makes a CD version of some of their maps. It's a pretty good set, very detailed. You can add waypoints, transfer to paper or to your handheld GPS. I have an older version, maybe 6-8 years old, and I'm going to buy the $50 upgrade with a lot more lakes. Good stuff. lakemap dot com.

I have the Lakemaster 2008 version on this laptop and it's a great planning tool. It has all the same data as the chip versions plus it can take input from a USB port GPS antenna puck for real time positioning. It can go out in the vehicle on the ice if you want to take the laptop with you. The cursor gives lat/lon position as you scroll and you can place waypoints that will show their position for printing. You can export the maps as jpeg pictures and work them prior to printing if you have drawing software. And finally, the Lakemaster tech support has been well above average and very helpful.

All in all, it has been $100.00 well spent.
