broken rod tip

Hello all,

I purchased a beautiful hand made ice fishing rod last year and the tip broke. I sent it back to my mothers friend who built it and it broke again. I have repeated this process 3 times only to have the dang tip come off the rod three times. The tip has never broke due to a fish, it has come off simply when tying ice jigs or setting the rod down. I have plenty of other ice rods that have never broken with years of abuse, and fighting nice fish, so this is kinda frustrating.

My question is whether or not i can just shave the rod down so that the next guide acts as tip and i can simply use this as my ice bobber-rig. I have used it just a couple times and have failed to get a good hookset on the fish. Just wondering if i should scrap the rod, use it as bobber rod (hoping for this), or just keep sending back and having the tip break off?

-Hey Great fishing to you all!

why not just get a kit and replace the rod tip yourself. It's pretty to do. Use emery cloth like a shoe shine rag to get he diameter you need so the new tip just slips on snug, heat the new tip shank and the glue and slap it on and align to the other guides. What I have done when replacing a tip is to slip a short piece of shrink tube on the rod and when I glue the new tip on I slip the heat shrink tube over the new tip shank and use a heat gun to shrink it to the pole.
