Fishing in Current

Try a Nils Jigging Shad, and tip the rear single hook with a minnow head.

This is a good river walleye rig and a good one to start with as you learn how to fish current situations.

In general, look to fish out of the current as much as you can. Fish tend to not wish to fight the current so they lay near current edges and let the current push baitfish to them...in ambush.

Good jigs to try are the New Macho Minnow in 1/2 to 3/4, Reel Bait Flasher Jigs, Northland Thumper Jigs, and Whistler jigs.

The Whistlers will blow out of the cone of your electronics in current, so use them in light current situations.

A very good all around river jig is the Heddon Sonar, it is a "Blade Bait" and is very current friendly and ideal in many situations for walleye on rivers.

Tip them on the bottom treble with a minnow or shiner head, stronger current tip the rear treble instead...this keeps the jig straight.

Some final tips that will help is use untra-thin superbraids...like 8 lb Power Pro, as it is 1 lb diamiter, this will lessen drift.

Drill 2 or 3 holes in line, set the flasher in whatever hole down current that best serves you in that situation with the jig you select. Fish up current from the ducer. Just put the ducer deep enough in the hole to read your bait well, so it remains stable and does not bobble in the hole due to current.

Northand Whistler jigs work very well also. If current is enough you will need to drill a second hole to put your electronics in to keep your lure in its cone angle. I would no worry about them feeling the weight of the jig. By the time they feel the weight, they will feel the hook if I am on the other end of the rod.
