Rod End repair

ryanmitchell

Question

On vacation I stuck my musky rod into the hollow dock/pier piling. It was a tight squeeze but when I removed it the very end broke off. Anyone have any suggestions on how to repair it. The hollow blank is exposed. Is there some kind of plug I can insert, glue and then maybe tape like a tapered baseball bat handle? Thanks

One can put a new tip top on the end of the rod for very little money.

One can find these in some bait shops and you will need to make sure the size of the end of the rod blanlk will fit the new tip top. Then simply heat up the tube of the tip top, then slide the tip top you heated up along side a glue stick and slide it on the rod end.

Exactly what Harvey said. If it is a high end rod, I would try to find a rod builder or shop nearby and get a better quality tip. That is unless your local bait shop has something like Fuji in stock. A cheaper one may wear out on you.

I may have read this wrong.. But I think he is talking the other end of the rod boys.. The Handle?.. If I am wrong, take the advice of the guys above.. but if i am right.. I would go to the rod making forum we have here and contact Kris at Lake Lady rods.. he will fix that bugger right up... He will probably have to add some cork(if it was a cork rod.. and or eva foam.

If you wanted to try and fix this yourself.. I would suggest taking some cork and shaving it.. add some glue to the shavings and then re apply to the rod.. make it slightly larger than the handle was before.. then sand when dry.. You may want to add a table or chair cover at the end?

Yeah I re read it and it does sound like that butt end of the rod is the issue. If the last piece of cork is still there you can go to the hardware store and buy one of these little plastic things you put on the bottom of a chair to protect the floor and glue it on with and good epoxy.

yes guys, the handle end, not the tip with the guides. Sometimes that part of the handle, where the cork meets the end is a darker color. The end part broke off. If was only a 6'6" gander mountain rod. I might have bought it for $30, but it is stout, and I use it for my musky jerkbaits. It still works fine, but looks kinda crappy, especally with the 1/2 hollow blank exposed. So now that we have that cleared up.... I like the cork idea.
