Ranger not going into gear

Recommended Posts

I have had a problem with my 96 Ranger. When it's cold and I try and put it in gear, it doesn't go. It seems when i warm it up good, everything is fine, but when I try to go cold, I put it into reverse...nothing, put it in drive....nothing. Turn the engine off and back on, then it seems to work fine. Any ideas???

The valve body gasket on these liked to blow out, it would cause a delayed engaugement, and a 2-3 slip. You could also have a bad or sticky valve, or a bad pca (pressure control) solenoid. Is the fluid full, and not burnt?

I am assuming, you have a auto tranny?

It isnt that hard to do, but it depends how technical you are. Just remove trans pan, remove trans filter, remove bolts to the valve body, remove bolts from seperater plate to valve body and replace gaskets. reassemble and TORQUE to proper specs, refill with fluid. A couple hour job on your back, but messy!

I have seen some of these that have been slipping for a long time, then have it repaired and it worked like new, but when it is slipping, it is making extra wear on the clutches.
