Sufix "Ice Magic" Mono

Anyone else using this stuff? How do you like it?

I’ve been very impressed with the open water Sufix braid for bringing in the big Cats, so when I stumbled upon the “Ice Magic” mono, I had to give it a try.

I was a little leary about the hi-vis, maybe being “too” hi vis, but haven’t used it for any finicky bite situations yet. I really like it however for times in which the line has caught an ice edge at the side of the hole or freezes in. It is very easy to see where it is stuck at. Also helps for tying knots.

So far so good.

Well it took less than a month and half a dozen outings to become very disappointed in the Sufix Ice Magic line.

Last night I broke off at least 3 separate times.

I peeled off about 20ft each time to to rule out a bad spot.

4lb line and I could take a piece and snap it like thread. mad

I thought maybe, just maybe that was normal and I wasn't used to the strength of 4lb or just too strong for my own good laugh

Well today I trashed it all and respooled with Gamma. Guess what....I cannot break it with my two hands. I've heard good things about the Gamma so hopefully no more respooling this year. smirk

I just started using vanish this year and so far I like it

I use Vanish 2lb and 6lb almost exclusively except for my jigging rods for walleye, where I use fireline crystal or smoke and vanish leader. No break offs for this cat!

Great...I just spooled up two reels with the stuff. frown Did you check your eyes and tip on the rod? Any nicks on your reel?

that would explain it, but being that it was on 4 rods/reels, I ruled that out.

I can't confirm that it was weak like that from the begining, but it sure seemed to get worse and worse on my most used rod/reel.

I was also really surprised to see how much memory was in this line. Only a month and it was coming off the spool in coils.

Actually I would like to hear what others have found. Maybe my experience was an anomaly and I hope it is because I think sufix braid is great.

dtro,

I have had suffix ice "magic" line spooled on a couple of my rods for a full year now. Two of the rods are pan-fish rods spooled with 2 lbs. test. I usually respool every year but I checked it before I used those rods this year and I was surprised how little memory it had. So far so good for me. I have 6 lbs. suffix braid on a walleye rig but I really can't get used to the braided line. I can't stand the sound of it on my guides and it seems to absorb water then it freezes causing head aches for me. I haven't had any breakoffs except for the pike that I have managed to get to bite.

Those have been my expreirences with suffix. The reason I tried the ice line in the first place was because I used the suffix seige 14lbs for bass fishing the year before and I really liked it for the amount of stretch and strength.

Suffix can't be worse than Vanish. While I have never used Vanish in the winter. A few years back I switched to vanish for my spinner rigs, and for leaders with live bait rigs. If I didn't replace the leader about every 20 minutes or so, if I got a pretty good fish to bite the line would snap. It seems any nick in the line render it useless. Rub a rock, or log useless. I had to cut all my spinner rigs and had to remake all of them. I don't know if vanish has gotten better since I gave it a try, but there is no way I would ever even consider to put that garbage on even a panfish rod.

Thanks for the review.

I have gotten a odd "defective" spool of line here and there myself. Maybe that was the problem. IDK how it could happen but I bet I have gotten a half dozen bad spools from assorted manufacturers over the years.

I have yet to try the Gamma stuff, every time I try to get some they are out. I have been sticking with the berkley ice lines and they have done OK.

I have P-Line Fluero-Clear Ice on some of my other rods and have been very impressed with that...the reason I went with the Suffix is because I can't find the P-Line anywhere anymore. Glad to hear at least some have had success and good things to say about it.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
