I have dell laptop pentium 111 that will not hook up to the internet with the cable pluged into the modem. I get a cannot find server message on internet explorer?

Do you know that the cord between the modem and the laptop is good ?

Has the laptop ever connected to the internet using a cord ?

It the laptop setup for wireless service as a default and needs to be setup for a Ethernet connection would be my guess or the Nic card could be bad.

1st thing to do is go to, start, run, key in cmd, then in the window that opens, key in ipconfig and hit enter. You should get some IP info. What you need to look for is the IP address. You want something other than 0.0.0.0 and or anything starting with 169.x.x.x x= any numbers. If either of those are there you are not getting connected to the internet.

It also would help if you can tell us if that is a telephone modem or cable/dls modem.

It hooked up the first time I tryed it. It is frontiers DSL modem. The cable is good internet explorer will not open.

With the cable connected to the modem have you tried to restart the computer ?

The spot were the cable connects to your computer is there any lights on/or flashing ?

I have tried restarting the com. with cable plugged in. There is a light by the connection on I also plugged that cable into another com. and it hooked to the internet fine.

Do you get an IP address? If not you may need to restart your DLS modem. But like Jim said restart the machine with the cable plugged in.
