lungslicer
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck planting winter rye in their food plots. I have planted lots of clover, but never winter rye. I was wondering if their is anything that I can mix with it to keep the deer feeding. Any info would be great. buckhunter21
We have tried it before with some success and then put about 1/4 acre into it thes year. They have yet to hit ours yet but if it was like the othr year we planted it they will once there is a good coating of snow on the ground because it will be the only thing that is still green. It does well planted by itself in early to mid september, you want it to be about 6-10 inches all by the first killing frost for the best results. You can also mix with another small grain like wheat or oats, wheat and rye will stay green all winter but oats will turn brown after a couple good frosts. Not sure if it would mix well with anything otehr than that becasue you have to plant it so late, maybe sunflowers to get them coming to it early but they will die with frost also. Another nice thing about rye is it will green up early in spring nd start growing if your deer mow it down in the winter.
