Ranger482
Have been looking at buying a 20ga. just for grouse and have looked really hard at buying a 870 express, but ran accross the Mossberg maverick 88 for $177 and wondering if it would be a good gun or should a guy spend the extra $100 and go with the 870....the 870 is a little more attractive with the wood on it rather then the synthetic that the maverick has, but was told that all the remingtons still use steel for their parts and the Mossbergs use some aluminum to lighten them up and also come in a little lower on price, just hitting the woods every now and then for birds and don't need anything too fancy, so any advice from you guys would be appreciated....thanks! Dilly
Pretty hard to beat the 870, it's been around for many years and is a good solid gun. They have rebates on them right now, check the current Cabelas flyer, think they had them on sale and had a $30 rebate. I've bought a couple of them from Cabelas and their 870 Express models also come with a green fiber optic bead and 3 choke tubes.
mnguy152
I would go with the 870. I have one for about 15 years and most of my buddy have at least 25 to 30 years on there never been to the shop or had a jam in mine.
Ranger482
Thanks for te input, I know that the 870 seems a little more solid and the fore arm does not twist and move around on the slides like the mossbergs do.
Neighbor_guy
"Maverick" is a division of Mossberg that acts as thier Importer. The Maverick guns are from Turkey, and have a history of issues.Do some research. Buy as much gun as you can for the money you are willing to spend. The cheapest option is generaly not the best option. There are very good Mossbergs out there. And the 870 Is a good choice as well, but I'd be enclined to shy away from the Maverick. Walleye Guy
I fyou are going Mossberg pump, buy the 500. There are some very good deals on the Mossberg 500 combo (rifled slug and smooth bore). Its tough to beat the old 870 however. they new Rem 887 have also had really good reviews.
