How far north is there ice?

I posted this same comment in the Ice Fishing forum, but there is hope... I was at the in-laws this Saturday, November 28th--they live 20 miles north of Deer River here in the upper part of the state, and they live on a lake with a big shallow bay on their end and a deep hole on the other end. I was able to walk a couple feet out on the shallow bay end, but the ice started to spider right away... Right at shore there is maybe an inch or just over, and it thins out after a few feet to maybe a 1/2 inch. Meanwhile, any lakes with any depth or less shelter from the wind are wide open still. There will be ice soon, though, so no panicking!
