Walleye set up help

Jay Merics

Recommended Posts

I will be jigging for walleye for the first time this hardwater season and looking for some advice. So far i have purchased a 30" JM walleye rod.

My questions are:

What reel would be a good choice? ($50 limit)

What line&lb. test?

Lures? i've been looking at Buckshot Rattle spoons, Frostee spoons, Rapala jigging shads & raps. What weights would be good 1/8oz.? 1/4oz.?

Should i tip the lures with minnows/heads?

I will be outside and not in a shack. Any advice is much appreciated...Thanks

The 2 most important set ups for walleye fishing are a shack and a vex. Check out Craig's list as there should always be an option for $100 or less. I have a 20 year old portable that I say I am going to scrap every year....and low and behold it lasts another season.Probably the best investment into ice fishing you can buy.The reason is that dealing with the icing up of holes, the low light conditions, and the cold can end a good trip faster than anything else.I would also say the reel and rod are less important than the presentation. Buckshots, Angle Eyes, Pimples are all good choices. Fathead head or whole bait both work. Bounce them off the bottom at prime times and you should pick up a few fish.

I'd second the flasher but not the shack as being very important, staying mobile outside will always put more fish on the ice than being clammed up in a shack.

Lindy Rattl'n Flyers are a great lure as well as Buckshot spoons, Forage Minnow spoons, and Swedish Pimples. Usually tiped with a minnow head or tail. When the bite gets tough I'll go to a Northland Forage Minnow tipped with a minnow tail, this gives a much smaller more natural looking presentation.

Jay-It all comes down to personal preference, but here's what I like/use: All my ice reels are Pflueger President 6720's, with the gray "thumpad" handle end, not the "Toggle" end. You can find some Tica's under fifty, too. A lot of good lines out there; Stren Microfuse Ice, Sufix Vanish, Trilene ice...the list goes on. I use six lb. A little heavier, and you still get good action. I use Forage minnows, Frostee spoons, and some 1/32 oz twister tails, all topped with the back half of a minnow. (Or just tail end) Good luck!
