Clothing suggestions for X/C skiing?

Recommended Posts

My 11 year old daughter has joined the local high school X/C ski team. I'm in need of suggestions of some decent clothing that suit her for this sport. I don't want to break the bank either! LOL

Thanks,

Brian

Get several sets of long underwear - the performance kind, in both base layer and midweight. Forget the heavy "expedition" weight stuff. Underarmor is nice, but awfully spendy. We stick to Duofold brand (comes in an orange plastic bag) or Terramar gear for the most part.

A couple of stocking caps. A couple of lightweight balaclavas. Several pairs of polypro or poly/wool sox. Don't get the big clunky socks - the kids are moving and the ski boots are fit for a midweight sock.

A windbreaker, a fleece jacket or three, some gloves (while a bit spendy, the lobster-style mitts are nice on colder days).

After the first few meets you go to, you will get a better handle on the fashion scene for the kids.

Good luck to your daughter!! It is a great sport, with a lot on nice kids and parents involved. Jr. and I are going shopping for a new pair of classic skis this week or next - can't have too many skis I guess......

Thanks Rob!

I was suprised when she came home from school and asked if she could join the team. Her teacher is the coach so maybe that had something to do with it? Regardless, I'm happy she's interested in it. Now my wife and I are gonna get XC ski's too, we've been talking about it for the last year or two. We have alot of different ski trails around here so it will be nice to hit different trails.

Good advice from Rob, I would add some sunglasses with interchangeable lenses (there are cheap ones in the sporstsmans guide and also at gander) that way she can change the lenses to fit the amount of light (important for seeing changes in the track). Light gloves for the races, bigger gloves for warming and up and standing at the starting line.

When I downhill raced I had a heavy coat and heavy ski pants that I would wear in line and then strip down when I got to the starting gate. After the first race you'll see what the older kids are doing and be able to follow that for the rest of the season. Good luck to your daughter!

I would suggest going with the name brands directed at skiing and outdoor activity, like Sporthill, Patagonia, Craft, Swix, etc. The reasons being that they are designed with wicking materials, usually have lots of stretch to them and are very lightweight.
