HeviShot
I was wondering if anybody knew the penalty for sitting in a permanent stand in a national forest? Going to be hunting in the chippewa national forest this opener and found some stands were gonna use. Just wondering what we might be getting ourselves in to? Or even the penalty for building a permanent stand?
CarpKing921
Can't get in trouble for sitting in one. first come first serve. Not sure of the penalty for building one though
snowfighter
Unless it has changed it use to be that you can put up a stand before season and it is to be taken down after season ended I think it was with in 10 day . You can't use nails or other mean to erect it that will harm the trees and cutting brush or trees for shooting lanes is a no-no.If it is a illegal built stand that has been there year around and you are in it you get the ticket, and yes first come bases on stands on public property.I n there information I had got they strongy recomended portable stands. bogwalker
If you are in it you are responsible for it.
FatDan
I know the law is if it's on public land it's there for anybody to use but you also have to remember that somebody built it so there is a very good chance someone will be in it or not very happy to find someone in the stand they built just be careful some people don't care what the law say's I know we hunt up there and and we have a few run in's. I would not want to see anybody get hurt over something like that.
HeviShot
Im confident these stands havent been hunted in for quite a few years as we had to fix them up ALOT. Hopefully we dont see as many wolves as we did bear hunting.

slovene
According to the DNR handbook, only portable stands or blinds that do not damage natural features and are removed at the end of the season are allowed on National Forest Lands. Also, cutting shooting lanes are also not allowed. So, in effect, you ARE hunting "illegally", even though you were not the original stand erector. I hunt in the Superior National Forest north of Chisholm and the crackdown on permanents has already begun. The group of guys that I saw get caught had to dismantle all the stands, including all lumber and nails, and haul it all out of the woods, load it on their trailer, and haul it home, all DURING season. I do not know if a fine was given to them, but lots of hassle during your hunt IF you get caught. The way they were busted was a fed and state warden would drive around during season, see cars/trucks parked on the federal land, and walk in to their stands when they weren't there to check what type they were using. I don't like portables anymore than you do, but if you want to hunt the fed. land, I would suggest doing so. Hope this helped!
