Calling techniques that work...

Recommended Posts

I always enjoy bringing up this topic. I was just wondering what calling techniques/sequence have been successful for everyone? We all know that grunting, rattling, and bleating work, but how do you do those things to make it a successful technique for you?

I personally have had the best success with my doe bleat can in early November. The sequence that works for me is bleat, wait a few seconds, bleat, wait about 30 seconds, then one more bleat. 3-4 bleats over about 1 minute. If nothing responds I try it again in about 30 min. If I don't get a response to either one, I will wait at least another hour before I call again.

Having a receptive deer is the biggest thing. I don't believe a specific cadence of calling, or combination of calls, really plays a role in calling. Have a quality call that makes a lifelike sound and don't blow it, toot it, or bang it like you're playing the tuba and it can work - if you have a receptive deer. In most cases you will be calling to an animal you see, so play it by their reaction. Start quiet enough not to spook them and adjust from there. As far as cold calling, same story, start softly and increase your volume as you go so as not to spook any close but unseen animals.
