Deep Cycle Batteries in Freezing Temps

Is there risk of keeping deep cycle batteries in freezing air temps for extended periods of time? Currently, my boat is stored in a shed without heat, and I am concerned that the water inside might freeze and ruin the batteries. I fish till ice-up and I don't want to hit the water and have ruined batteries. Thanks.

I'll have mine plugged in this year also.

If not plugged in I would bring them in to be on the safe side.

Though I did leave them outside last year and they faired well. And that was with them sitting totally incased in ice. Water got in the boat and the drain plug was not pulled. I thought for sure they were going to be toast.

It's not necessary to bring them inside or keep them plugged in if you periodically make sure they have a full charge. The problem is that most of us don't have the self discipline to check them regularly throughout the winter months.

I leave mine in the boat but I put a charger on them about once a month to make sure they are at full charge.

If you let a battery get low on charge you increase the risk of freezing. The advantage of leaving them outside is that it is actually better for the battery to be kept cold. Sounds contradictory but it's true.
