Rabbit hunting

I was thinking about trying a little rabbit hunting. We just bought a beagle for my 7 year old and thought it would be fun for the 3 of us to try. Looking for any suggestions or tips. Does anyone hunt rabbits on public land? What kind of cover should I be looking for?

rharm,

Congrats on acquiring a beagle. That is the first step to an incredible amount of fun...........or an incredible amount of frustration.

As excited as you probably are to get him out hunting I highly recommend working on some serious obedience training before hitting the brush. You may think he responds fairly well in the backyard, but get him a nose full of bunny or, worse some "off game", and he will most likely loose any semblance of obedience he once had. It can be pretty disheartening for a young lad looking for his lost hound.

Notice on B-mans photo the electronics those hounds are wearing. Those are not for looks. I highly recommend investing in a reasonably priced E-collar and get him to understand the simple COME command with tone and mild stimulation.

I only wish I had gotten that same advice many years ago when I started. It took me 40 years to realize that you can use beagle and obedience in the same sentence.

That said get ready to have a blast running beagles.
