Starting a new tackle box - back to basics

I did not have a very large collection of tackle, and what tackle I did have is now resting safely at the bottom of Peltier Lake. I want to start anew and have a topic that might be fun to discuss. If you could only choose 3-5 lures\live bait rigs for fishing your main types of fish what would they be. I expect to see a lot of "classics" the tried and trues. I like to fish for a variety so I am looking to stock a very versatile box without having 20 different color Rapalas of the same size=)

Types of Fish

Bluegill/Crappie

Walleye

Pike

Largemouth Bass

example:

Pike:

Daredevil

X-rap Gold/Silver

Down Rigged Shiner Minnow

Walleye:

1 oz bottom bouncer w/Chartruese Spinners

#5 shad rap in shad or yellow perch

#11 floating ralapa rainbow trout

Slipbobber with 1/16 oz jig, split shot and a leech.

Roach rig with 3/8 oz sinker

Panfish:

1 1/2" gulp tubes, chartrues or yellow/red

1/16oz jigheads

1/32 oz jigheads

bobbers

1/32 oz flu flus, white

Pike:

#14 Husky Jerk in Firetiger

#12 X-Rap Clown

Tandem Spinner Bait, Chartruese or chartruese/lime green

3/4 oz Rattlin Rap, Blue/Chrome

3/4 oz Johnson Silver minnow, Silver

Bass:

Scum Frog

7" Gulp Turtle worms, Grape or Pumpkinseed

Bass Assassin Shad Assassin 5"

Hooks and weights

Single spinner bait white

There are obviously crossover baits but iff I was going to buy 5 species specific lures this would be my list today.

Crappie Bluegill-- Have to be some sort of Flue Flue or Fire Fly jig. I like yellow orange for a color best, pink/white for my second fave.

Walleye- lindy rig-- go with 1/2 oz sinker and a #4 or #6 hook.

Pike, 1/2 oz white chatter bait or spinnerbait.

Bass- Texas rig, 3/8 oz sinker 3/0 hook and a hunk of plastic. Pretty easy and cheap.

5 baits to fish for all species?

1/4oz jig and twister tail

#4 Salmo Hornet in Hot Perch

#10 Rapala Husky Jerk in Silver/Blue

Spinner bait (probably in white or black)

Lindy rig/slip bobber rig

Species specific, Borch nailed down a pretty good list, I'd have a Salmo Hornet in their someplace though.

Top 5 for multispecies:

1) #8 Shad Rap in Silver/Gray

2) Medium size white spinner bait with Colorado blade

3) #12 Deep Husky Jerk in Blue/Chrome

4) X-Rap in Gold/Black

5) 1 oz bottom bouncer with green or gold spinner rig

1/16th to 1/4 oz. jigheads, ideally in orange/chart/black triple color.

Gulp 3" minnows in Shad color (works with the jigs)

Perch color Rapala Taildancer.

Tandem Chart or Chart/white/silver sinnperbait (Titanium doesn't bend as fast)

Senkos (I like white or black or chart.) and worm hooks

Then of course to typical lindy rigging stuff, but I call them necessities, and not really "lures" wink

And get yourself a GOOD pair sidecutters and needle nose pliers, and jawspreader. And of course a camera for all those memories you need to catch smile

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
