Pipestone Lake Walleye Fishing

Recommended Posts

The walleye bite on Pipestone Lake is very good right now. The walleyes are on the reefs in good numbers. Most the walleyes caught were in 14-18 fow and a lindy rig and leech was the best. Guests the last few weeks were having good success with cranks as well. Had 2 muskies follow up today, 1 in the 45" class and a 35". Here's a picture of a fat 29" caught today.

Hey Piston Ring,

Who's boat are you in? I see a yammy on the back and I know you wouldn't be caught driving without a Honda on the back of the boat. Was that guy cutoff in the picture guiding you in his boat?

Superbee, nice fish!

Pipestone sure is a great lake, there are some dandy walleyes in there but you don't hear much about them because the fishing for everything else is so good. Seems like every trip we get one between 27 and 29 inches. Can't wait to head up there in almost exactly a month. I'll see you then! Glad to hear some muskies are showing themselves too, I'm still planning on catching one bigger than yours!

Outfitter - you are right about running the Yamaha vs the Honda. It was tough to adjust to it, but went up with the neighbor in his boat to do a little work and get some fishing with the nice weather we have been having.

Fishguide1 - It was great to have you up and am glad you and your son had a really good trip. We look forward to seeing you up again in the future. Let me know if you decide to do the ice fishing trip and we will get you on the lakers.

Hoffer - There are some great fish to be had on Pipestone. Alot less developement on Pipestone vs Jackfish/Despair which is always a plus. There is even less traffic up there from years back when there was 3 lodges on the lake and now there is only one. Let me know if you want to try and set something up. Would like to have you see what the lake has to offer.

NoWiser - Your trip is coming up fast. Don't forget the sweetcorn when you come up and I will pass you along a new spot or 2 that have been holding some good fish. See you soon.

The group that came out of the outpost on Pipestone today reported excellent walleye fishing, catching lots of walleye ranging anywhere from 8" up to 22". Lots of fish caught in the area around the cabin, the bay where Happy Landing Lodge was, and the NW Arm. Most walleyes were caught using leeches. Caught 2 muskies, one about 35" and 42". Had lots of follows, around 25 different fish total.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
