Depending on the bottom of your boat, it's possible for the ice tranducer to shoot thru the hull and get a reading. You just might need to add a touch of water to get good contact between the hull and the transducer. I've used this method with a small boat and a canoe many times

Flasher units can be very effective open water fishing. If you're stationary you shouldn't need the pipe at all, just toss the transducer over the edge you should have enough cord length. If you want you can purchase a hi speed transducer and mounting bracket for your unit for your boat which would allow you to use your flasher while moving. I recommend vertically jigging a jiggin rap just like you would ice fishing and you will find crappies will smack it! Good luck!
