reddog
I spent some quality time in the outdoors in a ground blind on Thursday viewing the annual Prairie Chicken mating dance/drumming/call. I gotta tell you that it is/was one of my most enjoyable mornings in the outdoors. I scouted on Wed evening, and secured permission for Thursday. I arrived at the lek at 6:15 and I was late for the performance already. I found it amazing that they were there well before daylight. I had no choice but to load up the ground blind and my photography equipment and just wade thru them. A bunch of them left while I was walking in, but while I was setting up the ground blind, they were flying back in.. I set up to the east of the drumming grounds, so that the early morning sun would be at my back, to optimize the photo ops. I had 18-25 birds about 25 yards to my northwest, and 25-30 more about 35 yards to my south.
