Pointer training books

There's an AWEFUL lot of talk about labs and training them in this forum. I know there are a bunch of pointer owners in here, what books do you recommend?

I read a few books when I got my last pup, but lost them in a fire a few years ago, so I just ordered four books yesterday.

They are:
Bird Dog: The Instinctive Training Method
Training Pointing Dogs
The Best Way to Train Your Gun Dog: The Delmar Smith Method
The Ultimate Guide to Bird Dog Training: A Realistic Approach to Training Close-Working Gun Dogs for Tight Cover Conditions

Any thoughts?

I don't have any dog training books at this point. I've read the older Robert Wehle book and it's okay. I'd check the local library. They usually have some dog training books.

I have all the George Hickox videos which I really like. The Delmar Smith videos are decent. The Ferrel Miller video is terrible. I've heard the Sherry Ebert video is good. The original Gun Dog - Training pointing dogs with Harold Adams isn't too bad either.

If you can find the book "Do it right, do it yourself" by Les Jenkings, it will greatly strengthen your understanding on how dogs learn and how they respond to training. I have trained all my dogs with his method with great results. I have talked to him on the phone numerous times, the last time being about 6 months ago. He told me they are working on a reprint of the book because its currently out of print. I borrowed mine to a buddy about 4 years ago and haven't seen it since. If you do find a copy please let me know so I can replace mine.

If you're looking for a book on Pointing Labs there is one that is VERY good.

"The Pointing Labrador" by Paul & Julie Knutson

I highly recomend it.

Slowfinger - You nailed that one on the head. It was a long first 10 nights or so.

Now she seems to think that 5am is a good time to get up. I keep trying to tell her pheasants don't open till 9am but she seems to think I'll want to grouse hunt at 6am.

She's doing great. We seem to screw up her schedule on the weekends and then we get a few accidents in the house, but other than those, things are going great.

She passed a big milestone last Sunday. She became faster than both my wife and myself. But the good news is I don't think she knows it yet.

This last week or so she has had an amazing growth/coordination spurt. She tears around the back yard and house almost as fast as a full grown Brit, it's amazing.

How is your pup doing? I'm assuming you had the same problem with howling at first?

Evenflow - good to hear things are going well with you and yours. It sounds very similar to our pup, as it's only been a few accidents so far, but I don't want to get worked up into thinking she's potty trained yet.

But she seems to understand things my last dog didn't this early....like our yard boundaries, and when it's time to play, and when she's done wrong. (nipping etc.) We've crate trained her and she's adapted well. I just can't wait until I don't need to keep at least one eye on her at all times...
