walleye vision
Anyone ever plant a Tulip Poplar tree (not actually a poplar)? They look like a great tree: grow fast, flowers, straight growth. Some sites say zone 4, others say zone 5. Any experience from anyone? Thanks,WV
Quetico
They are a zone 5 plant. I know the arboretum has tried them. I don't think they lasted the winter. All my nursery people say Tulip Poplars aren't hardy anywhere north of Chicago. I highly doubt you will be able to find them at any nursery in MN. They are less hard them Japanese Maples, which are actually sold up here. The arboretum will not leave their Japanese maple out over the winter, its put in cold storage where its protected. fishingforester
Quetico is right, but there is one that I know of on the U of MN campus (East Bank if I recall) and it was of decent size. If you are set on trying one out, it is worth trying find a source of trees that is as far north as possible and putting the tree in a protected spot.
