The fins on the outside of the engine are there to dissipate the heat, like the slats on a radiator. It is smart to blow the engine clean with compressed air frequently. That helps with the cooling. I overheated one of mine once and scorched the piston and cylinder. I was using it with an attachment that was for cutting logs into timbers and the long runs were too much for it. When its running hot, let it idle for awhile to cool down before shutting it off. And keep your aircleaner clean.

icehousebob, good tip on blowing out the sawdust.

I'll add that a leaned out engine will run hot and probably the main reason a chainsaw gets cooked.

Also depending on your saw, the bar and chain get oiled manually or automatically. Keep the oil level up. If the bar gets hot to the touch your either not getting enough oil or your periods of cutting should reduced. If you can hear the chain rattle its not getting enough oil. Give the saw a break, continually cutting for long periods is not the norm, well its not supposed to be.

Let the bar cool. Of coarse a sharp chain will cut faster, right there you'll reduce the time it takes to complete the job.
