Fishing/Hunting Widows: What do you do when they're away?

Recommended Posts

This topic was brought up to me recently by someone who knows all too well how it feels to be a Hunting/Fishing/Trapping/ETC. Widow and I, too, am occasionally a hunting/fishing widow. I usually have to work on the weekends now so I can't always go. I find it a good time to catch up with my mom and sisters and go out with friends. I'm going to see the band Hairball in a couple weeks when my man's fishing. I can't wait! blushlaugh What do you gals do?

Gee, what can I say? Jim is the one always stuck at home now, and I am the one always gone. Neither of us have ever hunted, but when he went ice fishing and I didn't I used to go see the movies that I wanted to see. Or play on the computer, or go places with my girlfriends. When my mom was alive I spent a lot of time taking her places, shopping, concerts, or movies.

That's funny! My man is such a details guy, this would never fly for me! I might have to mysteriously "organize" his office though soon. It's gettin' pretty scary in there! eek

He makes the chili because:

1. He likes chili.

2. He is bored.

3. He knows when I get home I will be too tired to cook. (So he thinks)

4. He is not a big fish eater.

5. Quite a few times I give the fish away because I can go out fishing everyday if I want.

6. It is one of the few things he can cook that is edible, besides hamburgers and hot dogs.

My hubby and son don't like watching the Real Housewives of NY, Atlanta OR Orange County blushblushgrin ! I just can't help myself girls! heehee(please don't judge grin ) laugh What books do you like to read Mrs. B? I'm in a book club with my high school friends and our latest book (that I better get and start reading) is the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Anyone read this one?

Lisa - I read about a lot of different subjects. I like romances, mostly because they are an easy read, but I also like suspense and true crime. Sometimes they seem too much like work, though. I have read some very interesting autobiographies lately by different famous journalists. I just finished reading one called "A Badge on My Collar" about police dogs. Good stories, but not very well written. And right now I am wading through a book called "On Killing" by a Lt. Col. It is about the psychological cost of killing on soldiers and policeman. I talk to a lot of cops on a daily basis, and every now and then, one of them will recommend a book that will help me understand their mentality or how they keep from getting jaded about life when all they see is bad things. "On Killing" is interesting, but gets kind of technical in spots, so that is why I'm "wading" through it. My very favorite book of all time, one I reread about once a year, is "To Kill a Mockingbird." I love it.

I am trapped in a house full of men, so if I can get rid of them all for a day or two, its like heaven. By day 3, the house is too quiet and I find myself having meaningful conversations with the dog. Now that they boys are older and have quit going fishing with Boilerguy, I'll sometimes grab them for a day trip to shop and have lunch. They are very funny, and we have a great time. I think BG misses having them come on trips with him, but it was bound to happen when they discovered girls don't really have cooties. This is the first year they didn't have a weekend ice fishing trip on URL. Boys had to work and are involved in school activities and they couldn't get the timing right. So I went with instead, for our anniversary. It was so much fun we probably won't even invite the kids next year!

I loved "To Kill a Mockingbird" too. Scout reminds me of my little sister.

Some of my favorite books I've read are the "Glass Castle", "Kite Runner", "Three Cups of Tea", "The Red Tent" and

"Why Do Men Have Nipples...". I also like to read Ray Bradbury books.

I live in house with only guys too. My 14 year old is starting to really get into girls and that is very bizarre. I really like a quiet house after doing daycare for 12 years! I read BG post and your blog about your anniversary trip! It sounded like you two had a blast!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
