Laptop help!!!

GotOne

Question

I using my daughters laptop because I shorted out my laptop. Anyway, I have a Compaq that has plastic hinges. One of the hinges broke and I have still have been able to use it. Last night a power wire of some sort that runs through the hinge frayed and shorted out. I removed a bunch of screws trying to remove the frame/housing, but can't figure out how to remove the top. Any ideas? Or, any recommendations on who to bring it to?? Thanks.

You should be able to find a manual on that laptop on HPs site that will help you dissemble the thing. Just do a search based on that model and you should be able to find some info on yours. There are way to many models and everyone is different to know exactly what can be done with yours.

Dunno exactly the parts you need, but I found some relatively small pieces of plastic for a Gateway computer to be surprisingly expensive.

The small strip of plastic above the keyboard where the power button is located cost nearly $100 and that was without the buttons, just the filler strip that the buttons mounted to. Didn't buy it, BTW.

If it's a model where the parts are common it might not be too bad, but if it's been discontinued for a while you never know.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a whole parts computer than just a couple of small parts for yours.

You might be able to download a service manual from HP/Compaq. I was able to do that from Gateway for the laptop I worked on.
