What would you of done?

Recommended Posts

Just wanted quick advise on what others have done in the past or what they would have done in the situation:

A buddy and I went out hunting this morning, started calling the first spot 'round 7:30 am. We called 4 or 5 spots until about 10:30 when we decided to head over to a spot where the previous week I had seen lots of dog tracks while shed hunting. The spot is kind of a overgrown clear cut, lots of shooting space, but also lots of brush. Anyways we just about got to the top of the hill walking to where we were going to call from and a big 'yote jumped up about 150 yards away through the brush and ran to the wood lines. We both yelped a few times trying to get it to stop but the only shot I ever had was about 200 yards slow running through some iffy brush so I didn't shoot. We sat for a bit to B.S. about what just happened and decided it would be best to leave and come back in a few days. Since he was already alerted to human presence we decided it would be best not to call so he wouldn't become educated. Hopefully our plan works. What would ya'll done: call after you spooked it, go back in a few hours and call, shot at the running 'yote taking the chance of either hitting it or scarin the heck out of it?

You were absolutely right in your decision not to shoot. It was also a good choice not to try calling.

I'm willing to bet this coyote knew exactly what you were and may already be educated. I'd say you have a 50/50 chance at calling him back in after a couple days if he's still in the area.

Hard to say. I'd have a hard time passing up a shot around 200 yards if it's not running, but I don't know what you shoot. If I didn't, I probably would have tried to intercept where I thought he was going (if that was an option). You definitely made the right choice in not calling. Hard to say without being there, but at least now you do have the option to go back.

Yeah thats what I was thinkin about more being in the area. I know there is more than just that one in that area due to the excess of tracks i've seen. As for shooting, usually when given a chance I shoot, in this case I had no chance. The distace wasn't the problem it was the running thru the brush. Also this spot is frequented a few times a week by a local hiker just buzzin thru the area so I'm hoping that this specicic 'yote just thinks thats what we were. I'll keep you posted.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
