It depends on who you use to upload photos. I use photobucket, and when I upload it will ask what size I want the pic to be. I usually make them 800x600 (15" screen), that way if somebody has a smaller screen they can see the whole image without scrolling.

It is the same idea as making an avatar which might be 100x100.
