The Darth Baiter
I have a 1998 Chevy Blazer with the 4.3 v6, recently the tranny blew or atleast thats how it seems, first gear revs high and the car wont move but the rest of the gears are fine, my question is should i rebuild it or just put a different one in it. Any one have any experience or opinions? any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Scott K
A reman tranny will set you back close to $2k, rebuilding it will depend on how much the labor rate is, and what parts are bad in the tranny. I would get the tranny diagnosed first so you are not replacing good parts, then if indeed the trans is bad, I would call around to junk yards to get a good price and a warranty on a used trans first. And welcome to Fishing MN!! The Darth Baiter
Alright thank you, yeah im bringing it to shop in a bit to do some other work and then i have an appointment to have the tranny guy test drive it and give me his opionion, i would really favor putting in a manual transmission but i figure that would put me back even more than i already have to be
Shack
Going from a manual transmission, to a an auto is not bad, but going from and auto to manual transmission would involve a little work and fab. Mounting a clutch peddle and hydraulics would be the hardest part, short of removing the auto and putting in the manual transmission it self. Plus you would have pcm and other electrical junk to deal with. Are you thinking of repairing the trans issue your self after a diag. has been done and a major trans repair is needed? Tyler23
is this your only vehicle? if you only drive this once is awhile with not alot of miles i would just get a good one from a salvage yard. but if your driving it alot i would get either a reman or new. deadeye
Ya good luck! I like rebuilding the one I have personally. If its done right the problem spots can be addressed. Make sure if there is a cooler on the radiator that it is flushed out! The person that had my blazer before me went through 4 trannys before they figured out the cooler was blocked.
