i have been there before. i was there last year. i bought a golden eagle, used for 200. i would suggest buying a bow at a place that you can shoot it. not sure of your location but archery country in St. cloud is a good one, another is prairie archery in Parkers Prairie, just north of alexandria, which i had good luck with. there is no pressure and he has LOTS of used and new stuff in your price range. a good thing about buying a bow at a place like this is they know what they are doing when they fit you. i reccomend not buying from a catalog. things dont turn out the way you want.

hey. there are many out there for that price range. i shoot a parker bow, hunter mag model. gander mtn carries parker. what i heard was one of the matthews bow designers broke off and started parker a couple years back. they are compact, lightweight, and have nice let-off. i found mine on sale for $325, retail $450(?).
i used to shoot pse, which has many bows in your price range.
other brands you could consider: bear, jennings, matthews. bow-tech makes an excellent bow, but may be above that pricerange.
also, make sure you get "fitted" for your draw length before purchasing.
good luck,
perch.

Man, this is deja vu! Same question recently asked by another newbie to bow hunting.

Step one, go to a good Archery only store, big stores that sell everything-outdoors don't have the qualified personnel, in most cases, that you need to talk to. Go to a Bow Pro shop and get fitted and talk to the guys or gals there that have shot bows for years. They will get the right draw length and draw weight for you. Find out what you should get before making a purchase, shoot as many bows as you can to see what you like and don't like. A pro shop will help you shorten the learning curve! Best of Luck!

I'll second the pro shop advice...

since starting ours last year i've dealt with a number of newbies with ill-fitting equipment...nearing frustration why they can't hit anything...(lefthander with righthande bow..twice!) service after the sale is important too....

we've got a 20 yard indoor range now....we get the new shooter on the line and hitting a pie plate at 20 yards before the bow is out the door...

good luck and good shooting!

I have a buddy who has pretty much the whole setup (no arrows) for your price. Here is a summary of what comes with his bow package.

Selling a RH PSE Nitro 29"/70# Brush Camo bow. Comes with PSE matching camo, micro-adjust shelf and rest w/double bladed launcher. Rest is whisper quiet and easily tunes as launchers are very forgiving. Also has a PSE Apex sight w/5 glow pins. Also includes NV System vibration dampeners and has Winners Choice string ($60) that WONT twist. Peep ALWAYS aligns w/o needing to use rubber tubing. All you need are arrows and you have an excellent bow for this fall. Cabela's sold this bow new for $600 and today, has it for $469 in latest catalog for the BOW ONLY. I'll take $400 for all of it, firm. I'll be out of town until 8/31 but can arrange to get it to you between now and then. I'll be checking email and this thread/site periodically. Will send pics on request.

Please email him at [email protected]

I am new to this sport this year as well. I visited Scheel's in St. Cloud and bought a new Parker Buck Hunter package (with rest, sights, quiver, hand loop) for $329. They didn't pressure me but started me out with some basic PSE carbon arrows, a bag target, field tips, hand release, and hard bow case. I think it all came to $450 after tax. They let me shoot it until I was comfortable and hitting the target fairly well before I left. They have also answered many, many questions for me since then. Perhaps the best part is that they set up the bow for me and showed me what they were doing the whole time. If I would have bought it from Cabela's, I would have had no idea in heck how to do this myself. Granted a veteran bow hunter might, but not me. This Parker model is by no means a luxury model, but I like it, it works well for me, and is very quiet once I put teflon covers on the arrow rest. My 2 cents.
